Frequently Asked Questions
What if I have never done yoga before?
Not to worry. Anyone and everyone can try yoga. Our hot yoga classes are great for beginners. No matter what your experience with yoga, you will find the class rewarding and challenging. The teacher will take you through each posture step-by-step.
What if I am not very flexible or very strong?
You don’t have to be super flexible or very strong to join any yoga class. Your flexibility and strength will develop with a consistent practice. You will see students of all levels participating in the same class.
What are the benefits of the heat?
There are two primary benefits of the heat. First of all, it promotes sweating which allows for deeper detoxification. It also helps the muscles ligaments and tendons soften up so you stretch more and stretch safely.
What if I have injuries or medical conditions (e.g., back problems or high blood pressure)?
A regular yoga practice can help heal old injuries and prevent new ones. Make sure that you talk to the teacher before class to inform them of your concerns and discuss any modifications you should make. As with any new form of physical activity, you should always consult your doctor for more information.
How should I prepare for class?
Please come 15 minutes before the class is scheduled to start to register. Suitable attire is anything that you normally wear to the gym (shorts & t-shirt or tanktop) as long as it’s not too restricting and not too baggy. Please do not eat for approximately 2 hours before class. And drink plenty of water all day long.
We provide clean yoga mats & towels for your use in class. Please bring water with you into class (we also sell water if you don’t bring your own). We have locker rooms and showers (with shower gel and shampoo provided) at and fresh towels for your use after class our River Valley and Telok Ayer studios.
What should I expect during class?
Our Hot Yoga classes (Hot B, Hot C and Hot Flow (HF) classes) are a fixed series, meaning the series of poses are the same in every class. This allows you to learn the poses more quickly and measure your own progress.
Hot yoga is slower paced with step-by-step instructions. Hot flow is a bit faster pace using more upper body strength. Vinyasa flow class is more dynamic and the poses change from class to class. Yin is very slow paced and focuses on deep stretching. Pilates (mat) focuses on core abdominal strength, mostly. Hatha is a basic yoga class, great for beginners. Hatha flow is in between Hatha and Vinyasa Flow.
In Hot Yoga, because the room is heated you may feel lightheaded or dizzy. This is very normal. You can take a break when you need to but we encourage you to stay in the yoga for the entire class.
You will sweat a lot during Hot Yoga so your body needs an adequate supply of water to allow perspiration to release heat from the body during class. Please drink plenty of water all day long, before you come for class.
All of our yoga teachers are dedicated to each of our students and give personalized instruction whenever possible. Don’t be shy! Introduce yourself and feel free to ask questions before & after class.
And after class?
After the first class you may feel energized or you may feel a bit tired. Once you start practicing more regularly, you will build strength and stamina. Even as soon as the second class, you will start tolerate the heat better and feel reinvigorated. And you begin to enjoy the heat. Really!
Drink plenty of water to replenish the water you lost during class and come again as soon as possible! The more consistently you practice the more your body becomes accustomed to the heat and to the challenge of class…and the more benefits you will see!
What else do I need to know?
We all want to have a wonderful experience with our yoga classes, don’t we? That means that we should do what we can to create a relaxing and welcoming environment, because we share the space and experience with fellow students.
Please arrive early (later comers are not allowed because it is very disruptive to class). Please do not bring your mobile phones into the yoga room. Please keep quiet in the yoga room before, during and after class. Please take short showers (especially during the peak hours) so others can shower quickly, too, and, of course, to save our precious resources! And, lastly, please enjoy the classes!
